Did you know that there are stricter rules regarding motorcycle license plates? If you break the law, you risk getting hefty fines and even the points off your license. Here’s how to place the license plate!
There are strict rules to observe regarding the position and conditions of the motorcycle’s license plate and you must never forget them if you don’t want to incur heavy penalties. Let’s see in detail what are the rules to be respected for the motorcycle license plate!
How to put the motorcycle license plate
The motorcycle license plate must be positioned in a certain way and it must be in perfect condition to be visible. Generally it should be placed on the rear of the vehicle, but there are some vintage motorcycle models where the number plate should be placed on the side.
If the license plate is not placed in the right place on the motorbike, the Autovelox cannot register it in the event of an infringement and you risk being fined for preventing registration. There fine ranges from 87 to 345 Euros and the seizure of the moped for up to three months is also foreseen.
In addition to the location, as mentioned before, the license plate must also be legible, so it doesn’t have to be dirty. In this case the fine is foreseen by Article 100 of the Highway Code and ranges from 41 to 164 Euros based on the illicit product.
Never tamper with the license plate
You must know that you must never tamper with the license plate, otherwise you risk breaking the rules of the Highway Code. First of all, if you bought a used motorcycle, check that the license plate is registered.
Secondly, if it is tampered with it is of a criminal offense subject to punishment for Use of False Document, as required by sentence number 7614/17 of the Italian Cassation.
Furthermore, it is always a criminal offence if you mount the license plate of a stolen vehicle on the bike. In this case we are talking about money laundering crime and the fine ranges from 2,500 to 12,000 euros. In addition, you also risk a prison sentence of two to six years.
You don’t even have to change the number plate with scotch tape, perhaps to change the letter, because this too is a serious offence, punishable by the traffic police with a fine ranging from 1,988 to 7,953 Euros.
