Gasoline – that’s how much we’ll pay for it. It is a real nightmare for Italian motorists.
The cut in excise duties on fuel has allowed Italian motorists up to now not to increase beyond a warning limit. With the beginning of the year, Giorgia Meloni’s government stopped cutting excise duties on fuel. Soon it will be possible to go back to paying more than two euros per liter for diesel and petrol.
Since the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine, the price of fuel has soared to two euros per litre. As a result of the increase in gas, the price of diesel had risen even more than the price of petrol. The state has intervened in the fuel sector lowering the prices: the previous government led by Mario Draghi had foreseen the cut in excise taxes on fuel, but with the Maneuver of the Meloni Government, it was decided to cancel the cut in excise taxes on petrol.
The consequence? The price of petrol has risen again, touching the psychological threshold of two euros. The Minister of the Environment Fratin he argues that if the price of petrol breaks through the two euros, the Meloni government will be ready to intervene again with the cut of excise duties on petrol.
Petrol price increase towards 2 euros per litre: for Fratin, the increase is sustainable
The Government led by Giorgia Meloni has decided to stop cutting excise duties on petrol, but this decision has allowed the Executive to save the financial resources needed to deal with the energy emergency. For the Fratin force worker it is a “sustainable” increase on the part of the population.
The Minister of the Environment himself believes that the increase in the price of petrol is due to speculative moves and not the zeroing of the cut in excise duties wanted by the centre-right government. Suffice it to say that between the end of 2022 and the beginning of the new year, the price of petrol increased by about 20 cents and will continue to fly towards the psychological threshold of two euros. If the price of petrol were to break through this limit, the Meloni government would be ready to intervene by reintroducing the cut in excise duties on fuel. Even the Vice-President of the Mulè Chamber he believes that the increase in the price of petrol is due to speculative moves on the market.

Giorgia Meloni’s government has decided not to continue the strategy taken by the previous Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The Executive itself believes that it is about “tolerable” increases by Italian motorists. Furthermore, we find ourselves in a period of budget constraints which require a prudent choice of the destination of financial resources. The resources were used to control the prices of energy bills, to cut the tax wedge and to increase minimum pensions.
Furthermore, Mario Draghi’s government had introduced the cut in excise duties on fuel at a time when fuel prices had soared following the outbreak of war in Ukraine. It was a wholly transitory measure dictated by the conditions of the international macroeconomic context. Gasoline price increase: how much will we pay?
There are those who believe that the increase in the price of petrol is attributable to speculative moves and there are those who believe it is the fault of the Government, which did not want to continue with the cut in excise duties on fuel. But the central problem is: how much will we pay for petrol in the next few months? Since the beginning of 2023 we have witnessed the return of excise duties, i.e. theincrease of 18.30 cents discount which we benefited from in the last few months of 2022. The price of petrol is also raised by taxes on the manufacture and sale of consumer products.
