Ford Has More US Recalls Than Any Other Automaker In 2022

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through December 19, 2022 shows that Ford has issued the most vehicle recalls in the United States last year. In a total of 65 campaigns, automaker Blue Oval has recalled more than 8.6 million vehicles in the country, far more than any other in the US auto industry.

Vehicle manufacturers in the United States have issued 390 recalls as of December 19, data from the NHTSA revealed, affecting more than 25 million vehicles sold in the country. Ford took first place for the second year in a row, followed by Volkswagen with 45 recalls affecting more than 1 million vehicles, and Daimler Trucks with 42 recalls out of 273,311 vehicles. Stellantis is fourth with 38 recalls (over 3 million vehicles affected), Forest River with 35 recalls (203,694 vehicles affected), and General Motors with 30 recalls (3.26 million vehicles affected).

November was particularly busy for recalls at Ford with the automaker recalling half a million Broncos due to fire risks and about 450,000 F-150 trucks due to potential wiper motor failure. However, the component category that is being pulled the most for the company is powertrains. The other major recall Ford has to issue includes nearly 50,000 Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers with potential power loss.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said that “we improved our launch and initial quality, but our overall quality was not as good as it could have been and could have been.” Ford spokeswoman Maria Buczkowski also said Automotive News “That is why we implement a comprehensive end-to-end process to improve quality and keep it high — in design, production, delivery, and after-sales service and support.”

In general, there are several factors that influence the number of recalls an automaker makes every year. The higher the number of new models, the higher the chance of a recall, for example. The addition of high-tech security and assistance features, on the other hand, also means that the number of withdrawals increases. “While we never want a customer to feel uncomfortable with a problem with our product when it is needed, we will use the recall to bring their attention to it,” Buczkowski summarizes.
