This video is a classic example of an ancient spell if you want something done right, do it yourself. Not content with the style, quality, and price of any camper trailers on the market, this stubborn couple found a used 18-foot tandem-axle cargo trailer for $5,000. They spent another $15,000 turning it into a comfortable home away from home, which brings us to the video above.
Say hello to Corey and Cait. They’re the builder of this hidden DIY camper conversion, which still looks a lot like a cargo hauler from the outside. A discerning eye may spot the tongue-mounted air conditioning unit, and some may wonder about the three tiny windows on a base trailer. But we suspect most people won’t give this rig a second thought on the highway.
Open the door, however, and one finds a very spacious camper that looks fantastic. The rear barn doors open into the sitting and dining area, revealing a turntable and bench seat long enough to stretch out for a nap. A sizable kitchen occupies most of the trailer, with a large counter and sink to the starboard side. The secondary counter is at the front, next to the standing shower and toilet. The trailer carries a 30 gallon fresh water tank, a 20 gallon gray tank, and a 5 gallon black tank. There is also a propane-powered hot water heater, and cooking is handled with a portable propane stove.
The standard electrical system can shut down the battery, or connect it to shore power if available. Outlets are scattered throughout the trailer, and as we mentioned earlier, there is air conditioning to keep you cool in the hot summers. It’s actually a heating/AC combo, and with spray insulation under the tiles and custom cabinetry, the trailer is said to regulate heat pretty well. When it’s time to rest there is a short Queen bed which is electrically lowered from the ceiling at the push of a button. As Corey states in the video, it’s a feature he prides himself on.
This isn’t the first cargo trailer camper conversion we’ve seen, but it’s definitely one of the best DIY camping projects we’ve come across in years.
