LOS ANGELES, November 28, 2018 – The all-new 2020 Lincoln Aviator landed at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week with advanced technology that allows luxury SUVs to kneel down to greet you, scan the road ahead for uneven pavement, and allow you to drive using your phone. your smart instead of a key.

A mid-sized, three-row premium utility elevates Lincoln’s design vision while delivering Quiet Flight, a key brand concept that advocates the principles of beauty, gliding, humaneness, and artificial asylum. The Lincoln Aviator will be available globally, entering the highest volume segment in the US, the mid-luxury market, and the third highest volume segment in China.

Also debuting was the Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, named for its gliding power and effortless performance. This marks the first time the company has combined a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and advanced hybrid electrification technology capable of delivering smooth performance and instant torque.

“The Aviator represents the best of our brand DNA and signals the direction for Lincoln vehicles going forward,” said Joy Falotico, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “It offers unparalleled elegance, effortless performance, and comfort – a true representation of Lincoln’s vision for the future.”

Power, ability, and choice

Aviator offers the kind of capability premium clients need in a three-row SUV, with all-wheel drive available and a choice of petrol or hybrid powertrain. The standard twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, paired to a 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission, is expected to produce 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. torque for easy acceleration.

With the hybrid option, the twin-turbocharged Aviator Grand Touring engine and advanced electrification technology are targeted to deliver even higher levels of performance. Projected to produce 450 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. torque, the all-new Aviator Grand Touring is expected to deliver greater performance than many mid-size three-row luxury hybrid SUVs.

“This is our most advanced hybrid technology yet,” said John Davis, chief program engineer, The Lincoln Motor Company. “Together with the standard twin-turbocharged gas engine and advanced electrified Grand Touring technology, the Aviator set out to define effortless performance – performance that only Lincoln can deliver.”

Lincoln Drive Modes allow clients to further customize their driving experience, while the standard 12.3-inch configurable LCD instrument cluster confirms their preference with beautiful, easy-to-read dynamic graphics and prompts. In addition to the five signature Lincoln settings – Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery and Deep Conditions – two new modes are designed specifically for the Aviator Grand Touring. These modes, Pure EV and Preserve EV, allow clients to choose when and how best to use their electrical energy, while enhanced Excite mode maximizes performance.

Client focused, intuitive technology

Aviator features many intuitive technologies designed to assist drivers while enhancing the overall travel experience. From the start, its suspension system automatically lowered the vehicle to “greet” the driver, adding a new level of sophistication to Lincoln’s signature welcoming headlights. The convenience of this feature also makes loading cargo easier.

The ease of the overall experience continues as clients step in, using their compatible smartphone as a key to access their vehicle. Lincoln Phone As A Key technology, debuting on the all-new Aviator, is enabled via the Lincoln WayTM app. This allows the owner to lock and unlock, open the liftgate and, most importantly, start and drive the vehicle – all without a traditional key.

Phone As A Key offers additional features. For example, a driver can activate the tracker’s tweets to locate their vehicle, or

If owners want to loan their Aviator to a family member or friend, this technology makes it just as easy, as up to four “keys” are provided in each vehicle in addition to the standard smart key fob.

If the phone battery is dead, a passcode can be entered on the standard exterior keypad to enter, then a backup code can be entered on the center touchscreen to start and drive the vehicle. If the phone is lost or stolen, Phone As A Key can be easily removed, giving clients peace of mind.

Also new to Lincoln is the availability of technology that allows the Aviator to “see” potholes or uneven pavement and make immediate suspension adjustments to keep the ride as smooth as possible. Adaptive Suspension with Road Preview uses the advanced front-facing camera to continuously scan the road, seamlessly adjusting the suspension as needed.

All Lincoln vehicles come standard with a suite of driver assistance features known as Lincoln Co-Pilot360TM. With the arrival of the Aviator, Lincoln’s most advanced suite of driver assistance technologies will be available in a new upgrade called Lincoln Co-Pilot360TM Plus. He added:

Traffic Jam Assist helps guide vehicles using adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane centering and traffic sign recognition, which scans for speed limit signs along the road, adjusting speed based on the information obtained
Evasive Steer Assist offers assistance to the driver to help avoid collisions with slower or stopped vehicles; this provides additional steering support when a collision cannot be avoided by braking alone
Reverse Brake Assist can help you stop the vehicle while reversing if the integrated rear sensors and the Aviator’s camera detect obstacles behind
Active Park Assist Plus takes the stress out of parking by taking over steering, gearshift, braking and acceleration functions at the touch of a button to navigate parallel and perpendicular parking spaces with ease

“All this innovative technology has a purpose,” said Falotico. “Together, these features make the Aviator’s driving experience even easier and more intuitive.”

Aviation inspiration

The limitless allure of aviation has long inspired automotive design, and the all-new Lincoln Aviator takes that inspiration to the next level.

“The connotation of flying is intrinsic to the vehicle line,” said David Woodhouse, director of design, The Lincoln Motor Company. “You have the stature and presence of the grille up front, then the tapered body and tail – creating a different aerofoil analogy.”

The Aviator’s dramatic lines exemplify Woodhouse’s view of luxury. “Luxury is about creating something you didn’t know was possible,” he says. “That requires a certain level of mystery, seduction, and allure – factors that clearly play into Aviator.”

The Aviator’s multicolored Flight Blue exterior color exhibited in Los Angeles complements its flowing lines. Lincoln’s signature grille is done up with eye-catching black and glossy chrome accents, while a wraparound windshield completes the aviation-inspired theme.

The all-new Lincoln Black Label theme, Flight, harmoniously combines Luggage Tan and Ebony, further enhancing the cabin ambiance. The application of bright engine dials, brushed in tiny circles, replicates the finish of early aviation instrument panels and enhances the theme. The supple leather upholstery is minimally processed to maintain its natural texture.

The Chalet is another Lincoln Black Label choice for the Aviator, evoking the contrasting pleasures of the mountainside and the inherent comfort of an après-ski lodge. With Espresso and Alpine Venetian leather and deep Silverwood applique, every touch is designed to awaken the senses.

Another available Lincoln Black Label theme is Destination. Celebrating the art of travel, Destination takes its inspiration from vintage suitcases, returning to a time when travel was filled with excitement and intrigue. Mahogany Red Venetian leather with intricate diamond weaving on the seat is complemented by subtle khaya wood applications – making long and short journeys a true pleasure.

Lincoln Black Label was created for clients seeking the ultimate in luxury experience, offering premium materials in specially selected designer themes and a number of membership privileges. The grille for the all-new Lincoln Black Label Aviator features an inverted grille mesh with a repeating pattern of a strong, bright badge motif.

Comfort and convenience
The spacious and airy aviator’s cab features horizontal lines, minimizing visual clutter to provide a relaxing sanctuary. The available RevelTM UltimaTM 3D Audio System recreates the authentic concert hall experience by immersing passengers in rich, superior sound coming from 28 speakers throughout the cabin.

The advanced ergonomic steering is intended for ultimate ease of use and adjustability; only a subtle movement of the thumb at the 10 o’clock position is all that is needed to access the voice command button. The steering wheel features simplified four-way switches in strategic positions to control music, telephone and navigation functions.

The Perfect Position seats available with Active Motion offer 30-way adjustment, massage capabilities and additional lumbar support for the driver and front-row passengers for ultimate comfort, while flexible second-row seats recline, adjust forwards and backwards, and slide forward for easy access to the third row. The third row provides ample seating with plenty of room left for cargo, ensuring that nothing gets left behind. The advanced underfloor battery packing in the Grand Touring edition enables all the benefits of an electrified powertrain without sacrificing boot or leg room.

Other convenience features include a wireless phone charging pad located on the front row center armrest, while a handy media tray is available for front row passengers. Multiple power outlets throughout the cabin and standard Wi-Fi hotspots keep passengers connected wherever their journey takes them.

“At Lincoln, we are always thinking about the next best way to enhance luxury for our clients,” said Falotico. “Aviators arrive at this perfect crossroads – where power and beauty meet performance and technology.”
