In its current form, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been on sale since 2018 when the brand introduced a major redesign for its off-roader. The model did not undergo major visual revisions but received new technology and a more efficient powertrain. Now, a new version of the G-Class is being readied for a mid-cycle facelift, which should only bring minor design changes as new batch of spy photos show.
Our photographers captured this camouflaged prototype today in snowy Stuttgart, Germany. There is foil covering the front fascia, though that doesn’t mean we’re expecting major changes. It appears the bumper could receive a bit of a fresh touch and that’s all about the front that we know so far. The situation is similar with the rear, where – in addition to the redesigned bumper – there may also be new internal graphics for the LED taillights.

Bigger improvements are expected inside the cabin. We don’t know if Mercedes will give its luxury off-roader the new widescreen layout of the S-Class, C-Class, and SL, although we do know that there will definitely be a new infotainment system inside. The G-Class is currently the only product from the Stuttgart-based automaker without the latest MBUX and this will change with the introduction of the refreshed G-Class.
On the engine side, there shouldn’t be any major changes, though some form of electrification looks to be on the cards at this point. The top-of-the-range model, the G63, currently relies on a 4.0-liter V8 engine with a peak output of 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic. . The G63 can also get mains support for more power and increased efficiency.
The greenest G-Class is expected in 2024 when Mercedes will launch a full-electric model based on the off-roader. It will use a layout with four electric motors, one for each wheel, in an attempt to match the combustion-powered model’s off-road capabilities. Large battery packs should provide electrical energy and even an optional battery pack with silicon anode chemistry has been announced.
