Because of its bold and futuristic styling, the C-HR doesn’t show its age despite the subcompact crossover being around for six years. With the Prologue concept introduced earlier this month, Toyota is offering a preview of the second-generation model which is expected to go on sale in 2024. New renderings from independent artists look to see the future of the B-segment model as a production version.
Already set aside for the United States, the new Toyota C-HR will once again stand out from the current crop of small crossovers by having a bold exterior design. Sleeker “C”-shaped headlights are present on the funky little crossover, along with wider taillights and a sportier roof-mounted spoiler.
Although the Prolog has recessed rear door handles, they are visible here and mounted at the same level as those on the front door. Seeing how they were mounted at the top of the C-pillar on the outgoing C-HR, Toyota will likely stick with unconventional door handles for the second-generation model. It remains to be seen whether the pop-out door handle concept will be found on road models.
The Japanese automaker says the cabin will be more spacious, suggesting a slightly longer wheelbase with a longer tailgate. However, the crossover won’t necessarily be longer overall as the overhang will be shortened for the new model. A regular mirror has been added to replace the Prolog’s side camera. Toyota says a tri-tone finish is planned for the more expensive version.
In addition to the visual overhaul, the 2024 C-HR will also have a plug-in hybrid powertrain to join the existing self-charging hybrid. A pure electric model isn’t planned as the company is working on a separate subcompact crossover based on a dedicated EV platform for its “Beyond Zero” lineup.
As to when the premiere is scheduled to take place, Toyota simply says the Prologue is “a vision of a car that will soon hit the streets across Europe.” This tells us that a debut could be planned for late 2023 or early 2024.
