The First Trailer for Gran Turismo Film Shown, The Video Game Angle Looks Awesome

From video games to real-life racing, that’s the main theme of Gran Turismo movies – films based on popular video games that have been around for 25 years.

Announced back in May 2022, the film Gran Turismo is based on the true story of an impossible dream. Sony has shown us our first look at the filming of the film that just wrapped up at this year’s CES, which we’ve embedded at the top of this page. The trailer also features the film’s notable cast, including Hollywood stars Orlando Bloom and David Harbor of Foreign object popularity.

But of course, the main star of this film is Archie Madekwe who will play Jann Mardenborough – a British professional racer who became the youngest winner of the Nissan GT Academy competition. The Gran Turismo film will be based on Mardenborough’s racing career, which began through a racing video game.

Science fiction director Neill Blomkamp directed the filming of Gran Turismo. At the CES 2023 presentation, Blomkamp discussed the advantages of filming using a Sony Venice 2 camera with a Rialto extension system, which allows them to fit an IMAX resolution camera in a small space. One example cited was the Le Mans prototype car, which had a very small cockpit area.

Rialto’s extension system also allowed Blomkamp to recreate popular angles from video games, such as the third-person view from behind the vehicle and the famous grille shot. The trailer features some of those shots, along with messages from Bloom, Harbor, and Madekwe for those looking forward to the film.

Sony’s film Gran Turismo will hit theaters on August 11, 2023. It’s just one of at least 10 games Sony is currently in production for a film adaptation on PlayStation Productions. Titles mentioned include Spinning Metal and God of War – both were confirmed to be adapted for the silver screen.
