De Tomaso P900 Debuts With V12 And 12,300 RPM Redline

There used to be a time when hypercars were few and far between, but now it looks like we’re getting a new, insanely powerful and expensive monster every week. De Tomaso Automobili introduced the curvaceous P900, a track-only machine that bucked the trend by eschewing electrification. Limited to just 18 cars priced at $3 million a pop, it’s touted as carbon neutral thanks to a newly developed V12 that’s engineered to run on synthetic fuels.

The engine was shaped to be an engineering marvel as De Tomaso claimed it was the smallest and lightest V12 ever developed, weighing only 220 kilograms (485 pounds). It spins up to 12,300 rpm or 200 rpm more than the Cosworth V12 mounted on the Gordon Murray T. 50. The naturally aspirated factory produces 900 horsepower in a vehicle that weighs 900 kg (1,984 lbs) dry, giving it a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio similar to the Koenigsegg One:1.

All that power is routed to the rear axle via a sequential Xtract gearbox, but the mighty V12 won’t be ready until near the end of 2024. Impatient customers can have the car as early as next summer if they’re willing to take it. a Judd V10, which is related to the engine used by the Benetton B197. If the name doesn’t sound, it’s a Formula 1 car driven by Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger during the 1997 season.

As far as style is concerned, it’s almost as whimsical as the Apollo Intensa Emozione (IE). That’s no coincidence as both cars were written by the same design team. The P900’s appearance has been refined in the wind tunnel used by F1 cars where the hypercar has adopted a DRS-enabled active rear wing.

Performance figures haven’t been disclosed, though the company says the P900 will be as fast as an LMP race car. In other words, it should be a worthy competitor to the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro, another license plate-less hypercar. Complementing the model’s debut is news about the De Tomaso Competizione racing series where one percent of the crowd can have fun at special events.

These official renderings and early specs serve as a preview ahead of next spring when De Tomaso plans to fully reveal his V12 monster.
