Alpha Motors Montage Debuts As $499K Retro-Looking EV

Alpha Motor Corporation is taking reservations for a new model that looks nothing like other EV brands. The Montage Coupe resembles the modern look of classic British sports cars from the 1950s such as the Bentley S1 Coupe and Morgan Plus Four. Prices for the limited production model with a retro feel start at $499,000.

Alpha says the Montage is available with an optional electric drive unit that produces 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and 2,640 pound-feet (3,335 Newton-meters) of torque. Power is channeled to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission with a ratio of 9.53.

The company announcement doesn’t say whether these huge numbers of revolutions are in the wheels after doubling the torque from the gearbox, but in general these big numbers do. For example, GMC originally quoted the Hummer EV as having 11,500 lb-ft of torque using this method.

The company’s spec sheet doesn’t list the output for the Montage’s standard powertrain.

The battery capacity is also unclear. Alpha says it’s a purpose-built lithium-ion pack that provides about 250 miles (402 kilometers) of range. Charging performance is also not available.

“As we reached milestones along our roadmap to mass production, opportunities were created to build custom vehicles. The Montage was created to bring people together to support electrification,” said Alpha Motor Corporation in the model announcement.

It’s hard to get an idea of the size of the Montage from the renderings. The vehicle measures 173.2 inches (4,400 millimeters) long, 72.83 inches (1,850 millimeters) wide and 54.5 inches (1,384 millimeters) high. For comparison, the new Nissan Z measures 172.4 inches (4,379 millimeters) long, 72.6 inches (1,844 millimeters) wide and 51.8 inches (1,316 millimeters) high.

Inside, the Montage has room for two occupants. It has a retro looking instrument cluster with a large analogue dial with chrome trim all around. The center console has large vents with more chrome trim and a classic radio. But there are modern touches such as digital speedometer and digital sound system. For maximum storage space, there is cargo space under the hood and in the trunk.
