Volvo Gives Hints Of Electric Sedans And Wagons Could Come After SUVs

A few decades ago, you were looking at sedans or wagons when talking about Volvo vehicles. However, as the era of electrification began, Volvo’s push for electric vehicles has exclusively involved SUVs. However, that could change in the coming years, according to CEO Jim Rowan, but there will be conditions that must be met.

The Volvo EX90 is the latest electric SUV from the Swedish brand Geely. This is the third EV, after the more conventional C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge. There will be a fourth, smaller electric SUV, which was teased during the reveal of the recently unveiled EX90. It will debut in 2023.

After that, it’s unclear whether Volvo’s next electric vehicle will be another SUV. However, CEO Jim Rowan offered some clues in an interview with Autocar. When asked whether sedans and wagons will play a role in Volvo’s electric future, Rowan gave a vague answer, saying that they are trying to capture the full range of customer needs in cars.

Rowan opened the door to the possibility of an electric sedan and wagon in an interview.

“Our strategy is that we will be tight. We will keep the demographics we think make sense. We’ve been teasing what’s coming next, and we’ve hinted that we’re going to make a smaller SUV. Then different formats, sedan and estate or whatever: we’ll get to that when we get there,” said Rowan Autocar.

Rowan also noted prices in the EV era. Fortunately, platforms and technology sharing between EVs play a big role in bringing costs down.

“You need to achieve price parity between ICE and BEV. No industry can rely on subsidies for a long period of time. You have to make sure you can be comparative,” Rowan said. Autocar.

For the record, the Volvo EX90 flagship SUV is built on the new SPA2 platform. The announced smaller electric SUV will use the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), a modular platform developed by Volvo and Geely.
