Mazda CX-90 Teaser Video Shows Upscale Interior, Reveals New Colors

The new Mazda CX-90 will be revealed in full on January 31, but the “unboxed” teaser campaign doesn’t leave much to the imagination. The latest video focuses on design, and while we’ve learned a few things about the large SUV’s exterior, the star of the show is the interior.

And it looks like the cabin is a bit luxurious, based on what we’ve seen. Automakers love to waste words emotion regarding vehicles and Mazda is no exception; the company will use a mix of neutral colors with traditional Japanese stitching on the dashboard to evoke that feeling from the driver and passengers. When these CX-90s came together, we saw swatches in light gray, dark gray, and white with chrome accents and wood trim in a few locations.

However, we are not sure that it is real wood. Interior designer Becki Owens appears as a guest in this video, discussing color and texture for interiors. He handled a wood sample with a sticker on the back labeled Stoneform, which is an alternative wood flooring material he was designing. Later in the video, we see the CX-90’s center console with what appears to be material applied to the top. Whether it’s real wood or Stoneform is unclear, but it looks pretty good in this app. Apart from that, we can see Mazda’s large SUV retaining the gearshift for the transmission as well as a number of tactile controls.

As for design cues on the outside, a new color called Artisan Red has officially been revealed. It looks like the red we’ve seen in other CX-90 teasers, and once again, Mazda is getting in the well emotion in the paint description. Beyond that, the video also offers some insight into the CX-90’s bodywork. Mazda’s design language uses mostly rounded and organic shapes versus hard edges to maximize paint reflectivity. In theory, it helps audiences create stronger – you guessed it – emotional connection with the CX-90.

With only five days before the big reveal, it’s hard to say if we’ll see another big CX-90 teaser. We already knew it would feature Mazda’s turbocharged 3.3-liter I6 making 340 horsepower, and we knew Mazda would offer a hybrid powertrain. Whether that includes the six-cylinder or the CX-60’s 2.5-liter four-pot is a question we still need to answer, but with full disclosure less than a week away, we won’t have long to wait.
